Arthur Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer whose concerns about tourism appear in the debate over the county’s changing economy. Historian Bernard Deacon discusses his comments in 1899 about Cornwall becoming a holiday resort, against a background of mining depression and migration for work.
That context matters when reading the Headland Hotel story. Tourism could promise employment while raising questions about local control, land use and the future of a community. Quiller-Couch’s comments belong to that wider argument; they should not be turned into evidence that he organised the 1897 Headland protests.
