Crantock Beach lies beside the mouth of the Gannel, below the village of Crantock. Its sands, dunes and rocky margins bring the estuary and the open Atlantic together.
Piper’s Hole, associated with a carved female figure and horse, belongs to this coastal setting. The beach, cave and village should have distinct identities: an account of one feature is not a history of the whole place. The Gannel’s tidal geography also matters here, connecting the shoreline with former crossings, cargo transfer and the warning legend of the Crake.
