Lappa Valley is a family attraction near St Newlyn East, inland from Newquay, where a leisure railway runs through a landscape with a much less leisurely past. The modern attraction began in 1974; the route beneath it reaches back to the industrial railway serving East Wheal Rose mine.

That distinction matters. Today's trains are part of a day out. The earlier tramway carried mineral traffic towards Newquay, with horses doing the hauling before steam took over. East Wheal Rose, Treffry’s tramway and the later Cornwall Minerals Railway each explain a different layer of the place you can visit now.

Visitors arrive at Benny Halt and travel towards the former mine site. The surviving East Wheal Rose engine house belongs to that industrial end of the valley; it is not the same map destination as the arrival area. Use the attraction’s official directions for present-day access.
