Phoenix was a small lead-and-silver mine in the Penhale landscape south of Holywell Bay. It worked the eastern lode system associated with East Wheal Golden, rather than being another name for the larger Penhale Mine.

Recorded output belongs to the 1870s. That matters when reading the story of the proposed Holywell harbour in 1865: a later production return cannot prove that Phoenix was supplying ore at the moment the harbour was proposed.

Phoenix is one of the less conspicuous workings that make the wider map worthwhile. The coast’s mining history was not confined to a single engine house or a single company. Follow its links to East Wheal Golden, Penhale and the Great Perran Iron Lode to understand the neighbouring workings without merging their dates or ownership.
