The iron-bearing geological deposit worked by several mines between Gravel Hill and the inland Perran district.
The Great Perran Iron Lode is a mineral-bearing geological feature extending south-east inland from Gravel Hill, at the northern end of Perran Beach. The British Geological Survey traces it for at least seven kilometres. Several mines worked parts of this wider deposit; their names do not all describe the same mine.
That distinction helps explain why a local mining story contains several workings, routes and proposed outlets to the sea.
