Padstow station was the terminus of the railway extension from Wadebridge opened in 1899. Trains approached beside the Camel estuary and crossed Little Petherick Creek before reaching the town.

The station marks the end of a railway that was actually built and operated. It is therefore distinct from the later unbuilt proposal towards Tregurrian near Watergate Bay. Keeping the station, completed extension and proposed coastal route separate helps explain both Padstow’s real railway connections and the unrealised expectation preserved in Watergate Bay Hotel’s history.
