The railway from Wadebridge to Padstow opened in 1899, extending the rail network along the Camel estuary. Little Petherick Creek bridge was one of the major structures on the approach to Padstow.
The extension belonged to the London & South Western railway network, later part of the Southern Railway. It was a built and operated railway, unlike the separate scheme authorised in 1903 to continue from Padstow towards Tregurrian near Watergate Bay. Distinguishing those two projects prevents an unbuilt coastal ambition from acquiring the history of a line that really carried trains.
