The branch from Bodmin Road, now Bodmin Parkway, to Bodmin General opened in 1887. In 1888 it was extended to Boscarne Junction, where it connected with the older Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway.

The connection brought two different railway histories together: the Great Western route from the main line and the Camel-valley railway that had begun in 1834. Ordinary passenger services ended in 1967. The later heritage railway gives part of the route a different role, but its history is still best understood by keeping the main-line station, town station and junction distinct.
