The Cornwall Railway company opened the railway between Plymouth and Truro in 1859. The route made the River Tamar crossing and the railway through central Cornwall part of a connected main-line journey.
Stations including Par, St Austell and Bodmin Road belonged to this development. The company and its railway should be distinguished from the Cornwall Minerals Railway, whose network was organised around industrial traffic and later passenger services to Newquay. Similar names can otherwise conceal different undertakings, routes and opening dates.
