St Austell station opened in 1859 as part of the Cornwall Railway. It served a town whose surrounding district became closely associated with the china-clay industry.
The station belongs to the main-line route through Cornwall rather than to the separate branch running from Par to Newquay. Railway buildings and facilities have changed since the opening, but the historic station site remains a useful reference when comparing nineteenth-century transport with the later network.
