Par station opened with the Cornwall Railway in 1859. Its importance grew through the connection between the main line and the railway to Newquay.

Par Harbour and Par station are different places. Following them separately reveals the relationship between the port, the mineral routes and passenger travel across Cornwall. The Newquay route developed from industrial railways before passenger trains began in 1876.
