The railway between Par and Newquay crosses Cornwall’s china-clay country through the Luxulyan district. It developed from mineral railways, with the Cornwall Minerals Railway opening its connected freight system in 1874 and passenger services following in 1876.
The route joins Cornwall’s main line at Par and approaches Newquay from inland. It is distinct from the later line through Perranporth, which closed to passengers in 1963. The two routes served some of the same journeys at different times, but had different alignments, intermediate stops and industrial origins. The name Atlantic Coast Line is associated with the Par–Newquay route.
