Dive Newquay

Brand, ecommerce and dive bookings, built around real boat capacities.

A diving website built around real boats, real bookings and changing weather.

I rebranded Dive Newquay and rebuilt its basic Joomla site in WordPress. The new platform brought the physical shop online, sold dive packages, managed capacity-limited bookings and supported paid membership, children’s learning areas, SEO and advertising.

A website the business had outgrown

Dive Newquay’s existing Joomla website was basic, did not present the business with the professionalism it wanted and lacked the functionality it needed. The company had a physical shop, dive courses, boat trips and a club community, all of which needed a more capable online home.

I took on the rebrand and the complete move to WordPress. The project involved working through how the business wanted to present and sell its services, then building the tools to support those decisions.

02 / The work

Bringing the shop and dive packages online

The products from the physical shop were brought into a full ecommerce system. Customers could browse and buy equipment through the website, extending the retail offer beyond a visit to the shop.

I also worked with the client to shape its dive packages: what would be offered and how customers would buy it. I then built the online journey so people could book a package, pay and reserve their days through the site.

03 / In detail

Bookings that respected boat capacity

Dive places were limited by the boat being used, with capacity of eight or twelve people for the trips described in the brief. The calendar and booking system showed the trips and participation information, allowed bookings where space remained and closed a trip to further bookings once it was full.

That constraint mattered to the design of the system. The website needed to represent the availability of an actual activity with a fixed number of places, rather than simply offer an unrestricted product for sale.

04 / In detail

Planning for the weather and the wider club

Weather could prevent a dive from going ahead. The site therefore supported postponing and rescheduling activities as part of the booking setup. Handling those changes was part of the original business requirement.

The build also included paid Dive Newquay Club membership. Its children’s club had parent and child sections with learning material, adding another set of users and content needs to the platform. Memberships, calendars and integrations were considered alongside the shop and booking functions.

A rebrand supported by search and advertising

The refreshed identity carried through the WordPress website and the wider presentation of the business. Advanced SEO, Google AdWords and Facebook advertising formed part of the delivery, alongside graphic design, social setup, analytics and promotional video work.

The website gave those marketing activities a useful destination: people could explore the offer, check activities, reserve a place, purchase equipment or join the club.

06 / What changed

A broader commercial role for the website

The rebuild gave Dive Newquay a more professional presentation and the functionality to handle a large part of its offer online. The client received it positively, and the site helped bring in new clients.

For me, the strength of this project is the connection between the details. Shop products, dive packages, boat capacity, weather changes and membership all had to work within one customer experience. This was a separate company and commission from Plymouth and Teign Diving Centres.
