Growing Careers

A complete Joomla learning platform with complex permissions and simple administration.

Complex access requirements. A straightforward experience for the people using it.

I designed and built the complete Growing Careers website in Joomla, bringing courses, information, downloads, videos and member interaction into a manageable platform. The central challenge was balancing different membership permissions with a simple experience for both the community and the team administering it.

A basic website with a more demanding brief

Growing Careers needed to move beyond its basic website and provide information to its community through a proper content management system. Different membership levels needed access to different courses, information, downloads and videos.

Members also needed their own profiles and ways to interact through comments and messages in the relevant areas. The brief combined publishing, membership and community functionality, all of which had to be understandable to the people using the site.

02 / The work

The complete design and build

I created the entire Growing Careers website myself in Joomla. I developed the content structure and the membership access model together, so the platform could present different material to the appropriate groups.

The work was a separate commission from the main Ontario Agri-Food Education website, which I also designed and built in its entirety. Growing Careers has its own purpose and should be understood as its own project.

03 / In detail

Permissions without unnecessary complexity

The difficult part was combining access control with usability. The site needed to be highly functional, but it could not require members or administrators to understand the complexity behind every page.

I structured the system around the different membership levels, the material each group could access and the areas in which members could participate. Profiles, comments and messages fitted into that structure alongside the learning resources.

04 / What changed

A platform the team could manage

The completed CMS gave the team a straightforward way to administer the website and deliver the material its community needed. I also provided tailored handover training for the authorised team.

The client was very pleased with the result and its ease of management. This is a project where the main achievement was making a complex set of requirements feel manageable in everyday use.
