Plymouth & Teign Diving Centres

Two diving-centre commissions, connecting brand, ecommerce and bookings.

Modernising two diving businesses while protecting the value of their existing websites.

I rebuilt Plymouth Diving Centre’s Joomla website, combining a more capable booking and ecommerce setup with migration and SEO work. The owner then commissioned Teign Diving Centre after seeing the first site working, extending the relationship into a second major upgrade and rebrand.

Established businesses with valuable existing content

Plymouth and Teign Diving Centres were separate websites owned by the same person, Mark Leighton. They were established businesses, and the old Joomla setup needed updating and new functionality. However, the existing content was already performing well in search.

The brief therefore had two connected priorities: improve what the websites could do, while treating their existing content and search visibility as valuable assets during the migration. A visual refresh alone would not have addressed either concern fully.

02 / The work

Plymouth first: proving the approach

The owner chose to start with Plymouth. He wanted to establish that the working relationship was right and that the new system would do what the business needed before extending the commission to Teign.

I built the Joomla website and handled the associated migration and advanced SEO work. The scope included booking calendars, a booking system and ecommerce for the shop and expeditions, giving the site a more practical role in the centre’s day-to-day business.

Keeping useful content through the change

The migration needed to retain the value of the content already on the site. I treated the website upgrade, content structure and SEO as connected work, with the existing search performance informing the approach.

The aim was to modernise the platform and customer experience without discarding the material that was already helping people find the business. That is an important distinction in a rebuild for an established company: the existing site contains value as well as limitations.

Teign followed after Plymouth launched

Once Plymouth was complete and working, the owner asked me to undertake Teign. The second commission followed from his experience of the first build and the results he could see after launch.

Teign became a substantial Joomla upgrade and rebrand, with advanced SEO and migration work, a dive calendar, blog and member section. Its documented content structure covered more than 80 pages, making navigation and organisation an important part of the delivery.

05 / What changed

A relationship built through delivery

The clearest outcome was the second commission. The owner began with one website to test the approach, then extended the work to the other centre after the first launch.

Each business retained its own website and identity. The connected story shows both my technical role in upgrading established Joomla sites and the trust that comes from taking responsibility for the work through to a functioning result.
